Merletto Vase | Alessandro Isola

Merletto Vase combines the traditional craftsmanship of Burano – famous for its lace – with the distinct glass blowing technique of Murano.The concept follows on from the same creative and desire for design disorder that inspired the Stumble Upon range, where creases and fold are accentuated to make the object functional in another way. In this case, rather than a carpet, the object of focus is a table runner.

The table runner is an object that is intended to lie flat, yet in the act of using the objects that lie above it, is constantly disturbed and crumpled. Merletto vase captures this moment of disturbance and amplifies it, creating folds along its length. These imperfections are magnified until he creases are lag enough to display fruit or aperitif snacks. These creases are accentuated to the point that they create sealed tubes capable of holding water, allowing Merletto to serve as a vase when stood vertically.

Formed from glass, Merletto vase moves from transparent at its edges through to opaque at its centre. This change in colour and transparency, coupled with the folds in the objects form, distorts and filters the view through the vase in a way similar to that of looking through increasing layers of draped fabrics.
