Due to the need of extension of the company’s production area, some of the facilities had to be moved out of the main infrastructure.

Located at a transitional area between industrial and natural reserve zones, the company’s plot is limited by these two different realities which were crucial for the project’s alignment.

Thus the canteen and training room project explores the strain between wild nature and industry. By using shipping containers with 40 feet it was possible to overcome the limits to construct imposed for that natural reserve area and simultaneously to create a connection and transition element for the two different areas.

Through a formal composition exercise with the shipping containers volumes and shapes it was also possible to defeat the industrial component harmonizing the surroundings with the structure by directing the windows to the surrounding wild landscape. Hence, the strain between the two elements was mitigated in two different moments: (i) by the access to the project which is done through the bottom of the container projected over the natural stone wall pointing towards the industrial set. The approach to the set underneath the overlapping and closed volumes provides the set of containers the weight and the austerity of the facade which communicates with loftiness of the contiguous industrial volume. Up the stairs, one is challenged with an opposite reality: a plain white walls interior which opens directly onto a view of nature and open field; and (ii) by the room in the upper floor, at the top of the stairs, which main surface, a wall with 11 meters, breaks the industrial dullness of the containers, bringing the nature close to the users in all its dimension; in contrast a, window with precise proportions, facing the industry, reinforces the intrinsic duality of this project.

There are two connection elements departing from the central hall and leading to the containers, one leading to the kitchen and lavatories support areas and the other leasing to a larger room composed by two other containers which walls are again dematerialized in order to allow the nature to penetrate inside.

Our intention with this project was to better manage the strain between nature and industry, in the best possible way, guiding the users to contemplative moments as well as to allow them to enjoy the surrounding natural landscape during rest periods, most certainly adding life quality to their working day and creating spaces which promote the interaction between workers of the several company departments.

PT - Devido à necessidade de expansão da área de produção da empresa, alguns programas tiveram que ser relocalizados para fora daquele núcleo.

Inserido numa área de transição entre a zona industrial e área de reserva natural, o terreno da empresa é condicionado por estas  duas realidades as quais foram determinantes para a composição do projeto.

Assim, o projecto para os programas de cantina e sala de formação explora essa tensão entre natureza e indústria; através da utilização de contentores de 40 pés foi possível ultrapassar a impossibilidade de construção na área limite da reserva natural e criar simultaneamente  um elemento de transição e ligação entre essas duas áreas.

Através de um exercício de composição formal com a volumetria dos contentores foi possível anular a componente industrial, integrando-se a envolvente na estrutura com o direcionamento das aberturas para a paisagem natural, a tensão entre os dois elementos foi assim feita em dois momentos: (i) através do acesso ao conjunto, que é feito pela parte inferior do contentor que se projeta sobre o muro de pedra natural em direção á industria. A aproximação por baixo dos volumes sobrepostos e fechados confere aos mesmos o peso e a austeridade da fachada que se relaciona com a imponência do volume industrial adjacente, sendo, ao subir as escadas, confrontados com uma realidade oposta, o interior de paredes lisas e brancas abre diretamente para uma perspectiva de natureza, de campo aberto; e (ii) na sala do piso superior, ao subir as escadas, a superfície dominante, uma parede de virdro com 11 m, quebra a opacidade e frieza industrial dos contentores, trazendo a natureza para junto das pessoas, em toda sua dimensão; em contraponto uma abertura de proporção controlada, virada para a industria, insiste na dualidade intrínseca deste projecto.

Do hall central partem dois elementos de ligação que penetram nos contentores, um conduz para a área de apoio de cozinha e sanitários, outro para a sala maior composta pela adição de dois contentores, que novamente desmaterializa suas paredes para a natureza penetrar seu interior.

Pretendemos assim, com este projeto, explorar da melhor forma possível a tensão entre natureza e indústria, chamando os utilizadores para momentos de contemplação e usufruto da paisagem natural envolvente durante os períodos de pausa, certamente um acréscimo de qualidade de vida no seu dia-a-dia. e criando espaços de promoção de interação entre os colaboradores das diversas áreas da empresa.
