Extension of the Professional Hotel School “SAVOY” | Stifter + Bachmann

The design for an extension building for the Professional Hotel School in Meran was the winning entry in an open EU-wide planning competition. Also known as the “Savoy“, the school is situated in an historically significant urban context characterized by the main school building, which is a protected monument, many art nouveau mansions with typical mansard roofs, pleasant green parks, and the covered promenade along the Passer river. The school’s old building, erected in 1895, was originally a guesthouse that was converted into a hotel in 1900. It later passed into state ownership and became the seat of the Hotel and Catering School. The architects’ brief required an extension adjacent to the intricate old building, sharing the same, relatively small site. This challenge was met by creating a formally simple volume that leans away from the old “Savoy”. The only visible link between the two is a light, transparent bridge on the second floor. The sloping façades offer a modern interpretation of the surrounding mansions’ mansard roofs and relieve the block structure dictated by the urban context. The building seems to subtly alter its form as one walks around it, an impression created by the sloping façades and the changing angles of light. Its tapering shape makes it seem smaller than it really is while allowing plenty of daylight to penetrate the interior and visually widens the rather narrow spaces between the new structure and the adjacent buildings. The new building’s angled façades also mean that the prominent front of the historic Savoy building remains well visible from all sides. Around the lower part of the new building, the façades lean slightly outwards, lending the entrance to the underground car park a discreet air while at the same time opening up a generous space around the main entrance to the building. The site will be car-free; the courtyard that currently serves as parking space will be converted into a park in order to enhance the urban ensemble. The building’s shell consists of a monolithic façade of cast-in-place concrete with a granulated finish.
The urban character of the building is also reflected in the open, transparent, and fluent spatial sequences of its interior. Light wells, galleries, and atriums create visual links between the individual floors with classrooms, training kitchens, and dining rooms. The design and material used for the roof show that it was interpreted as a fifth façade.

Das Erweiterungsgebäude der Landesberufsschule “Savoy“ in Meran ist als Siegerprojekt eines EU-offenen Planungswettbewerbes hervorgegangen. Das städtische Umfeld ist historisch bedeutsam und ist gekennzeichnet vom denkmalgeschützten Bestandsgebäude, vielen Jugendstilvillen mit charakteristischen Mansardendächern, den Grünzügen der Parkanlagen und der Promenade entlang des Flusslaufes der „Passer“. Das Bestandsgebäude des „Savoy“ wurde im Jahre 1895 als Pension errichtet, um 1900 als Hotel umgebaut und als Stammhaus der Landesberufsschule für Gastgewerbe genutzt.
Unmittelbar neben dem vielgestaltigen denkmalgeschützten Gebäude und in der relativ beengten Grundstückssituation wird die Bauaufgabe mit einem formal sehr zurückhaltenden Baukörper interpretiert. Der neue Baukörper lehnt sich vom bestehenden „Savoy“ weg und wird überirdisch nur mit einem leichten, transparenten Steg im 2.Obergeschoss mit dem Bestand verbunden. Die schrägen Fassadenflächen interpretieren die umliegenden Mansardendächer neu und lösen die durch die urbanistischen Rahmenbedingungen vorgegebene Blockhaftigkeit auf. Die geneigten Fassaden lassen das Gebäude mit wechselndem Blickwinkel und Lichteinfall stets anders in Erscheinung treten. Das neue Gebäude verjüngt sich mit zunehmender Gebäudehöhe, lässt dadurch das Volumen kleiner erscheinen, lässt mehr Licht in das Innere treten und weitet die relativ schmalen Zwischenräume zu den angrenzenden Bebauungen auf. Durch die zurücklehnenden Fassaden des Neubaus bleibt die prominente Frontansicht des denkmalgeschützten Bestandes aus jeder Richtung gut erlebbar. Nach unten hin ermöglichen die dort überhängenden Fassaden die Schaffung einer zurückhaltend positionierten Tiefgarageneinfahrt, sowie das Vergrößern des Platzraumes im Bereich des Haupteinganges. Das gesamte Areal wird autofrei gestaltet und der heute für PKW-Stellplätze genutzte Hofraum wird dem Stadtensemble als Parkanlage zurückgegeben. Das Gebäude wird nach außen hin mit einer monolithischen Ortbetonfassade in gestockter Oberfläche realisiert.
Die urbanistische Qualität findet sich auch im Inneren mit sehr offenen, transparent und fließend gestalteten Raumfolgen wieder. In den einzelnen Geschossen mit Klassenräumen, Lehrküchen und Speiseräumen sind Lufträume und Lichtschächte als geschossübergreifende Sichtverbindungen angeordnet. Die Dachfläche wird in ihrer Gestaltung und Materialisierung als fünfte Fassade interpretiert.

Il progetto per l’edificio di ampliamento della Scuola professionale alberghiera “Savoy” a Merano è risultato vincitore attraverso un concorso di progettazione aperto ai liberi professionisti dell'Unione Europea. Il contesto urbanistico dell’intervento è di valore storico ed è contraddistinto dall’edificio esistente del “Savoy” sottoposto a tutela delle Belle Arti, da numerose ville storiche in stile liberty con tetti mansardati e dal verde dei parchi circostanti e della passeggiata lungo il torrente Passirio. L’edificio esistente del “Savoy”, costruito nel 1895 come pensione e successivamente ampliato nel 1900 quando diviene albergo, ospita attualmente la sede principale della Scuola professionale alberghiera.
Avendo di fronte un edificio storico sotto tutela e complesso e considerando in più la ristrettezza dell’area a disposizione, il volume edilizio nuovo sviluppa dal punto di vista formale un linguaggio architettonico semplice ed essenziale. Le facciate dell’edificio di ampliamento si inclinano nella direzione opposta del “Savoy” esistente al quale viene collegato al 2° piano una passarella in vetro leggera e trasparente. Le facciate inclinate interpretano in maniera innovativa i tetti a mansarda delle ville in vicinanza alleggerendo contemporaneamente la compattezza dei volumi imposti dalle prescrizioni urbanistiche. Attraverso l’inclinazione delle facciate, l’edificio sembra cambiare aspetto ad ogni cambiamento di punto di vista o di luce. La diminuzione di volume verso l’altezza dell’edificio lascia penetrare più aria e luce all’interno dell’area e verso gli spazi adiacenti valorizzando anche la facciata principale dell’edificio storico esistente. La modellazione delle facciate ha inoltre permesso di inserire in modo quasi impercettibile una rampa di accesso all’autorimessa interrata e la realizzazione di una piazza antistante all’ingresso principale dell’ampliamento. L’areale che circonda i volumi edilizi è libera da auto, il cortile destinato fino a poco tempo fa a parcheggio è stato portato alla sua destinazione originaria di parco.
Il progetto, connotato da una forte riconoscibilità, utilizza pochi materiali e pochi dettagli; le facciate esterne di questo edificio monolitico sono materializzate in calcestruzzo a vista con bocciardatura esterna ed inerti naturali.
La qualità urbanistica si riflette anche all’interno dell’edificio con sequenze spaziali continue, aperte e trasparenti. L’edificio di ampliamento, organizzato su 5 piani fuori terra e 2 piani interrati, ospita principalmente aule, cucine didattiche e sale da pranzo. All’interno della volumetria sono state inserite doppie altezze collegando visivamente i singoli piani.
Nella sua configurazione e materializzazione, la superficie del tetto è tematizzata come quinta facciata.
