August von Trappe
Belgian bar & bistro Finland / 2014
August von Trappe is located in a former palace designed by Carl Höijer in 1896. Today the place is better known as Matkailutalo. The building is located next to Tammerkoski, which is in the middle of Tampere. Matkailutalo has been fully revived and transformed into a stylish, but yet casual living room central to the whole city. Matkailutalo was originally, until the 70’s, an office building for Verkatehdas on the eastern shore. It has also been a home for factory managers. Modern internationality and its cultural historically significant surroundings encounter in this Belgian bistro style restaurant. The bar operating under the restaurant offers a wide selection of continental Europe’s favorite beers with snacks. In charge of the kitchen is top chef and co-owner Hans Välimäki.
The designing was carried out with a modern twist, while respecting the building’s history and traditions, under the supervision of Museovirasto (the National Heritage Board). The handmade, unique and well-thought out details with authentic natural materials such as wood, stone, tile and copper, creates a welcoming and an enjoyable atmosphere. We specifically focused on preserving the original ambience of the building. The space planning was challenging, because we were dealing with a labyrinthine listed building, which was originally designed to be an office and a residence for factory managers. In addition to the space planning and interior designing, we were in charge of the project’s overall management. August von Trappe is an alternative for new kinds of casual, but yet stylish social evenings.
