In creating the brand for Commune’s newest properties, tommie, the AvroKO team wanted to explore the ideas manifested in the experimental communities of the 1970s where students and professors abided by the values of simplicity, community and individuality. These are the same values that guided the team in creating both the tommie brand as well as the design choices for all aspects of the hotels including the guest rooms and public spaces. Upon entry, guests immediately experience a “help yourself” atmosphere with an expertly curated area where equipped to personally outfit and curate your in-room experience choosing from a variety of items including vibrantly colored and patterned throws, fresh flowers, postcards, ear buds, pencils, notebooks and more. The modestly-sized guest rooms inspired the team to embrace the small and get creative, which led to very intentional design choices where every piece fit perfectly in its place. Additionally, taking a page from one of the most well-known experimental communities, Black Mountain College, they were also influenced by the dorm room-like mentality where the character of the space can be changed by the individual inhabiting it. These ideas came to life through a collapsible desk, cubby spaces for suitcases and toiletries, a blank peg board, empty bud vase coupled with more luxe moments featuring a walnut head board that wraps around the room and a wool rug. The other public spaces were built on the foundation of community and designing places were global strangers can collide and inspire each other. These day-to-night flex areas are equipped with collapsible walls to easily form larger or more intimate rooms for meetings or gatherings and include a listening library complete with individual head phones, record collection and library of music anthologies; a cafeteria-like space for eating and drinking interaction; and a creative lounge where coffee tables are covered in grid paper and riddled with pens and pencils.
