Fuzhou Shouxi building | NEXT Architects

The project is located on a complicated site, in the old city centre of Fuzhou, the capital of the Fujian Province. With a Floor Area Ratio of 5,0 and many limiting conditions, a U-shaped floorpan manifested itself as optimum. The program required 400 apartments of 45-110 m2 in size, which could result in a staggering mass of identical units, to prevent this variety and diversity is created by manipulating the balconies around the building.

Like the famous local ‘seal-stone’ or ‘shouxi-stone’, the balconies are crafted around the main building volume. This crafting creates a wide variety of individual apartments, each with their different exterior space. On the ground floor, between the U-shaped volume, a collective ‘living-room’ for all inhabitants is created.

De locatie bevind zich op een gecompliceerde plek, in het oude centrum van Fuzhou, de hoofdstad van de Fujian provincie. Met een FAR (Floor Area Ratio) van 5.0 gecombineerd met vele limitaties manifesteerde een U-vorm zich als de optimale oplossing. Het programma van 400 appartementen met een oppervlakte van 45-110 m2 zou kunnen resulteren in een overweldigende massa aan identieke units, daarom is verscheidenheid en diversiteit ingebracht door het manipuleren van de balkons.

De balkons zijn rondom het gebouw gevormd zoals de beroemde ‘zegel-steen’ of ‘shouxi-steen’. Deze vorm creëert een grote verscheidenheid in de individuele appartementen, ieder met zijn eigen unieke buitenruimte. Op de begaande grond is tussen de U-vorm een collecieve ‘woonkamer’ gecreëerd voor alle bewoners.

Het Fuzhou Shouxi gebouw kreeg de ‘Gold Medal Chinese Architectural Housing Design Competition 2012’ prijs.
