After living in this historic 19th century Beacon Hill townhouse for a decade, the owners opted to fully renovate the entire structure while salvaging and rebuilding key historic elements. This gut renovation provided new structural framing for all six floors, entirely new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, reconfigured circulation to accommodate a new elevator, and new windows, doors and finishes throughout. The Ground Floor was transformed to an open plan for the Family and Kitchen spaces with an historic oval stair rebuilt at its center. A modern open-tread stair was added at the rear of the house to provide secondary access to the more formal living spaces at the Parlor Floor above, where modern custom millwork and furnishings contrast with the restored historic fireplaces, curved doors, and divided light windows. Throughout the house this contrasting of modern and historic elements is played out with the juxtaposition of materials, patterns, and forms.
