Tutor Institute extension | DETAIL design - interior architecture & design
Greece / 2015
The need of more classrooms to accommodate additional students, led to the creation of this extension project designed by Dimitra Papafilippou and Penny Eleftheriou, aka dDesign.
In the previous year, dDesign studio completed the design of the existing Tutor Institute. However, due to its full occupancy, an adjacent building was integrated as a new extension and a canopy that linked both spaces was constructed.
In the interior, planes of vertical colorful tubes, reminiscent of the former design concept mark the space and provide a choreography of movements in the communal areas.
All classrooms expand around a center- placed, red staircase and have a different opening treatment – in the ceiling or wall – creating various spatial experiences.
The visually weightless canopy extends on both sides of the former building and becomes the connection of the two sites.
In the main court, the canopy’s structural frame is used as an unofficial place for sitting and socializing.
