N1 Intesa San Paolo Pavilion | D2U - DESIGN TO USERS

The N1 Intesa San Paolo Pavilion has been inaugurated on May 1st, at the official EXPO 2015 opening. Another prestigious assignment for the Milanese architectural firm D2U - Design to Users, which Polo Immobiliare Lombardia Banking Group has chosen to collaborate designing the EXPO 2015 N1 Pavilion. Massimo Colombo is the architectural concept designer, head of Intesa Sanpaolo Polo Lombardia, who has also managed the artistic direction; Tamara Gerosa, who works for D2U, is the project manager.

This project belongs to the initiatives and events that the Bank Group has been planning at MILAN EXPO 2015, as Official Banking Partner of the Event.
N1 Pavilion represents an important meeting point supporting all those people who, coming to EXPO, may need information and any kind of banking activities; it looks directly on to the Decumano (the main street of Expo site) at the west entry.

For this reason, besides satisfying some practical banking requirements, the building has a very particular and iconic architectural feature, that perfectly represents the commitment of Intesa Sanpaolo Group for this Exhibition, with its values of sustainability.

THE PROJECT: AN ICONIC BUILDING BOASTING A GREAT VISUAL EFFECT AND SUSTAINIBILITY

With a great visual effect, the outside part of the building looks as a truncated pyramidal volume, covered with horizontal slats of wood, crowned by a large shaded terrace.

The spaces are located on two levels: the ground floor, which houses the reception, a demonstration area, an internet point, and an area of self-safe banking, and the roof terrace on the top floor, connected by a shaped stair that follows the sloping run of the perimeter walls and the footboard for lifting the disabled. The “green” appears as a key element and connection between the level of the ground floor and the roof level terraced enriched by a hanging garden consisting of flower beds and shrubs. As tree species, maple, lemon and rosemary were selected.

The Pavilion square-shaped plan follows the geometric regularity of the occupied area. Its truncated pyramid shape has been chosen as the more slender and refined version of the parallelepiped.

The interior is characterized by the presence of Barrisol ceiling to finish the front wall of the cash point. Thanks to its peculiarity of being able to take any conformation, it has been shaped so as to originate a sort of large polygonal volume. As for the materials and finishes the floor (inside, outside, the terrace and the inside area) is in a brushed concrete-clay-like gres.

The lighting of the interior is ceiling-type recessed LED fixtures with a "blade of light" effect

The Pavilion shows up through messages for sustainable development in line with the theme of Expo "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life". Within this context, the Intesa Sanpaolo Pavilion is a building with a strong personality and focuses the attention on sustainability items and environmental impact.

E’ stato inaugurato il 1 maggio, in occasione dell’apertura ufficiale di EXPO 2015, il padiglione N1 di Intesa San Paolo. Un altro incarico di grande prestigio per lo studio di architettura milanese D2U - Design to Users, con cui il Polo immobiliare Lombardia del Gruppo Bancario ha scelto di collaborare per la progettazione del Padiglione N1 di EXPO 2015. Architectural concept designer è Massimo Colombo, responsabile del Polo Lombardia di Intesa Sanpaolo, che ha eseguito anche la Direzione Artistica, capo progetto Tamara Gerosa per conto dello studio D2U.

Questo progetto si inserisce nelle iniziative ed eventi sviluppati dal Gruppo Bancario
per la sua partecipazione all’ Esposizione Universale di Milano 2015 in qualità di Official Banking Partner dell’evento.

Il Padiglione N1 rappresenta un importante punto di accoglienza e supporto per tutti coloro che, arrivando in EXPO, possono avere necessità di informazioni e operazioni bancarie di vario genere; ha affaccio diretto sul Decumano (la via principale su cui si sviluppa la struttura espositiva) proprio in corrispondenza dell’accesso ovest.

Per questo motivo, oltre a soddisfare alcune esigenze funzionali si è voluto attribuire al manufatto un aspetto architettonico interessante e iconico, che unito ai principi di sostenibilità potesse ben rappresentare l’impegno di Intesa Sanpaolo al servizio della manifestazione.

IL PROGETTO: UN EDIFICIO “ICONA” DI GRANDE IMPATTO VISIVO E SOSTENIBILITA’

Con un effetto di grande impatto visivo, l’edificio esternamente appare come un volume dalla forma tronco-piramidale rivestito in doghe orizzontali di legno, coronato da un’ampia terrazza ombreggiata.

Gli spazi sono organizzati su due livelli: il piano terra, che ospita la reception, una area dimostrativa, un internet point, e un'area di banca self-safe, e la terrazza panoramica al piano superiore, collegati internamente da una scala sagomata che segue l’andamento inclinato delle pareti perimetrali e la relativa pedana per il sollevamento dei disabili. Il verde compare come elemento chiave e di collegamento tra il livello del pian terreno e il livello della copertura terrazzata arricchita da un giardino pensile costituito da aiuole e da arbusti. Come essenze arboree, sono stati scelti aceri, limoni e rosmarini
La pianta del padiglione a base quadrata ricalca volutamente la regolarità geometrica dell’area occupata. La sua forma a tronco di piramide è stata scelta in quanto versione più slanciata e ingentilita del parallelepipedo.

L’interno dell’edificio è caratterizzato dalla presenza del telo Barrisòl posto a rivestimento della parete frontale dei bancomat. Data la sua peculiarità di poter assumere qualsiasi conformazione, è stato sagomato in modo da originare una sorta di grande volume poligonale. Quanto ai materiali e alle finiture il pavimento interno, esterno, della terrazza e dell’area interna è in gres con una finitura che richiama il battuto di cemento spazzolato.

L’illuminazione degli ambienti interni è a soffitto dove sono stati installati ad incasso nei pannelli di cartongesso del controsoffitto dei corpi illuminanti in LED con un effetto a “lame di luce”.

Il padiglione si presenta ai suoi ospiti attraverso messaggi per lo sviluppo sostenibile in coerenza con il tema di Expo “Nutrire il Pianeta, Energie per la Vita”. All’interno di questo contesto il padiglione di Intesa San Paolo è una costruzione con una forte personalità ed un’evidente attenzione ai temi di sostenibilità e dell’impatto ambientale.
