In the years 2007 and 2008 the old-established traditional Swiss tourist brand Kuoni under- went a complete relaunch. Due to their rela- tively radical commitment to a highly modern brand image it was necessary to reconceive the Kuoni travel stores in the major cities of the world. The design used for these flagship stores set an international benchmark in the travel sales business.

Our client: One of the leading travel agent worldwide

With over 100 years of corporate tradition Ku- oni is a worldwide synonym for high-quality travelling. The Swiss travel agent with its nu- merous branch office is present throughout the whole of Europe and, as one of the largest corporations on the international travel mar- ket, has set new benchmarks with its thorough brand relaunch.

Our task: Develop a design language for the flagship stores.

The building‘s floor plans from the year 1900 made it quite difficult to home a travel store. The flagship store had to have a concept which integrated two floors, each different in size.

We developed a solution for Zurich which provided appropriate functionality for the 40 sqm ground floor as well as for the 150 sqm upper level. The concierge counter is located on the ground floor. Here the agent meets the customers and leads them to the service desks on the upper level. A further option is to use the ground floor counter for general consultation or for handing out catalogues. A chalk board exhibits destinations on offer. The customers can check which offers are available on the Internet or directly in the booking centres online.

When designing the counter we implemented Kuoni‘s image values such as tradition, solidarity and expert craftsmanship. Twenty pendant lamps showcase the travel theme as ‘Lights of the World’.

The upper level is partitioned into a waiting area and nine work areas. The look and feel of the service desks were designed analogue to the counter, they do however have clearer stylistic elements. Possible waiting periods are shortened by stimuli in the inspirational area. Characteristic ‘concept boxes’ inspire here, filled with books, travel guides, postcards and everyday items.
