4 bedroom, 4 bathrooms, den, large kitchen/den area in main house, separate dining room. The house is in Santa Monica, a neighborhood in Los Angeles by the Ocean. It is a very desirable area to live due to its proximity to the ocean.

The house was built in 2008 and is of modern architecture. The architects were John Freidman and Alice Kim, JFAK Architects.

This client is amazing and gave us a lot of free reign with the interior decoration. She is a landscape designer and has two older sons, one in college and one in high school. Her husband, an avid surfer and cook, works for Heal the Bay. The family is very outdoorsy and spends a lot of time entertaining at home.

They wanted to pull the spaces together, make them more family friendly but hip. They wanted to balance the modern architecture with some rustic yet refined elements. Everything had to be cozy and comfortable but still be put together. Use of textiles was a must.

Because this client really allowed us to create a vision for the entire space, we wanted the home to reflect their client’s personality. We wanted to high light their excellent art collection while creating a space that felt refined, edited and comfortable. We wanted go a bit more masculine in the overall feeling by bring in lots of textures + a little more color than what we normally have done.

The client’s style? : Hippie yet refined. She loves color and texture but wanted it to be comfortable for friends and family.

The color scheme? : We played off the surround green and the colors of the ocean. We incorporated a lot of black too to balance the white. We try to keep it minimal and not mix too many colors. We usually pick one or two colors over the neutral colors, black and whites. We tend to reply heavily on mixing textures and materials. We like textured linens, a few patterns, velvet and leather to be in every room!

We wanted to focus the view on the outside of the house, so we moved the sofa to fact out and have the other seating face in to the room. It makes for more conversation and opens the area up to the kitchen, when the client is entertaining and cooking.

We were very excited to use the Kelly Wearstler fabric for the dining room drapery, it makes such a statement. Our client wanted extremely comfortable barstools. We looked at over 40 options and finally found the Thomas Hayes Pivot Back ones, they are heavenly. We also used all vintage rugs in the home and made all the upholstery which allowed us to use a variety of textiles to enhance the layered, textured approach we took to this home.
