Il nuovo ospedale pediatrico di Hargeisa, intitolato a Mohamed Aden Sheikh e realizzato per conto dell'associazione MAS Children Teaching Hospital onlus nasce dalla volontà di combinare una moderna concezione europea di ospedale con le peculiarità culturali e costruttive somale. 

L’area di circa 13.000 metri quadrati messa a disposizione dal governo Somalo è situata immediatamente ad est dell’ospedale di Hargeisa. Il progetto è incentrato sul massimo risparmio energetico, sulla razionalità ed economicità di costruzione e di esercizio, sulla gradevolezza degli ambienti e sulla semplicità di utilizzo da parte di utenti ed addetti. Il corpo principale dell’ospedale è composto da un insieme di fabbricati caratterizzati da colori vivaci collegati da un lungo corridoio centrale, insieme ad altri due fabbricati più piccoli delimita un ampio spazio aperto. Ampie coperture metalliche piane staccate dai volumi sottostanti costituiscono riparo dalla pioggia e, grazie ad un naturale ricircolo d’aria, una buona protezione dal sole. Pannelli solari termici assicurano l’acqua calda nelle ore diurne e pannelli fotovoltaici contribuiscono al fabbisogno di elettricità necessaria al funzionamento dell’ospedale. 

L’accesso principale avviene lungo il lato nord dell’area, da qui si accede ad un’ampia piazza aperta/coperta dedicata al triage ed all’attesa dei pazienti. Il corpo principale dell’ospedale (1.360 mq) si compone di 8 camere degenza per un totale di 32 posti letto, 2 camere isolamento per i ricoverati con malattie infettive, locali visita, infermeria, farmacia, laboratorio e mensa, oltre a magazzini e locali spogliatoio per gli addetti. I due fabbricati minori ospitano le attività di Day Hospital e di teaching; all’esterno è presente uno spazio dedicato al gioco e allo svago dei bambini, un orto per la coltivazione di frutta e verdura ad utilizzo dell’ospedale ed un’area piantumata a papaya.

MAS Children Teaching Hospital in Hargeisa, dedicated to Dr. Mohamed Aden Sheikh, has been designed to combine a modern European architectural concept of hospitals with cultural and constructive Somali peculiarities. 

The hospital has been built on an area of 13,000 square meters and it is adjacent to the Hargeisa Group Hospital, the only public hospital of the capital. The hospital has been designed to rationalize construction and running costs, to optimize the consumption of energy and to create a pleasant surrounding for patients, their families and the staff. The result is a group of lively colored buildings with different functional destinations, connected by a single indoor corridor. Two smaller buildings, dedicated to teaching and OPD activities (Out Patients Department), are located on the right and left side of the patio, in front of the main building, with sitting areas for the families. A second metal roof, mounted over the building, protect from the rain and create a natural isolation layer that shades the wards from the heat. Solar panel system allows reducing the consumption of electricity, which represent a considerable cost for the hospital. 

The main building of the hospital (1.360 m2 in total) hosts a ward of 32 beds divided in 8 rooms, 2 isolation rooms, a nursing station, a medication room, a pharmacy, a laboratory, a store and the changing rooms for the staff. As already mentioned, two independent structures face the patio. The east oriented one hosts administrative and teaching offices and a large room for meetings and teaching activities. The other one, still incomplete, will host the new OPD and Day Hospital spaces. Outside there is a space dedicated to games and entertainment for children, a vegetable garden for the cultivation of fruits and vegetables to use the hospital and an area planted with papaya.
