Extension & Refurbishment of 1960s Home | ArchitectureLIVE

This 1960s detached house is in the picturesque village in West Sussex within the South Downs National Park. Built in 1968, this tired and dated property still had most of its original features, small room layouts and no connection to its wrap-around garden.  

The project brief was to completey refurbish the property and transform it into a contemporary family home, with a bright and airy character. Our clients required a flexible layout for the main living spaces as well as a new kitchen, bathrooms, a new master bedroom suite and an integrated home office.

For future expansion, a gallery space can also be converted into an extra bedroom at a later date.

ArchitectureLIVE design created an open-plan kitchen-dining area and a gallery study within a new two-storey, partially double-height extension and a new master bedroom extension with en-suite bathroom and dressing room above an existing garage. Double-height glazing to the south, full-height glazing for the kitchen and a feature window carefully located cast early morning sunlight across the entire open-plan layout and beyond. Converting the existing dining room and kitchen also created a new snug area as further living space.

Inspired by Passivhaus principals and low-energy design, thermal improvements were made to the entire building by using insulated timber cladding facades which replaced the existing concrete tile hanging.  These changes together with a new solar thermal hot water system, have achieved a two-third reduction in energy bills.

Together with a new south facing terrace and easterly kitchen garden, ArchitectureLIVE's design has transformed this property ensuring flexible living for this family for years to come.
