A love of modernist architecture forms the inspiration for Gray Davis’ weekend lakeside retreat. This three bedroom home references Philip Johnson's iconic Glass House, built in 1949 in New Canaan, Connecticut. Gray and his partner envisioned designing a home of balanced beauty that would function as both a welcoming space in which to entertain, and provide them with the quietude of a private hideaway. A subdued combination of concrete stucco, stained black cedar siding and brick masonry complete the house's exterior. Vast glass panes enhance the 12-foot high ceilings and open the structure up to the outdoors. The effect is suitably dramatic, allowing the owners to open the home completely during the warm summer months, creating an outdoor living room in the process.

As an architectural riff on Johnson's freestanding brick cylindrical fireplace in the Glass House, an ellipse version in the main living area provides a commanding focal point to a space that seamlessly incorporate the kitchen, dining and living areas. In an effort to cultivate a high level of privacy, the couple installed a large private rooftop deck featuring a second cylindrical fireplace where they regularly entertain. The home decor is ruled by the couple's passion for contemporary art, as well as their shared love of weekends foraging in the Hudson Valley's antique stores. Old and new furniture govern the space with equal footing. The eclectic selection of treasures include a large Dutch antique armoire, Robsjohn-Gibbings woven chairs, Isamu Noguchi hanging light fixtures and a number of large-scale paintings by Mexican artist, Bosco Sodi.
