Penthouse interior located in Tokyo uptown where cultural heritage of 200 years ago is vigorously surviving.

The property of the condominium is close to the imperial palace and rare site where old cultural heritage of 200 years ago, “Edo” period in Tokyo, has been dimly survived as a townscape or monuments. The brief was to create contemporary interior evoking such a memory of Japanese aesthetic sense through planning, design and details.

“Tatami” room

Small tatami room connected to large living space is a contemporary version of old “Shoin” study room, is not only for the symbolic feature of this residence to be used as tea ceremony with guests, but very suitable for concentrated computer work sitting on “Tatami” straw mat in front of the fixed small desk.

“Shoji” screen

Window treatment is very crucial for the open penthouse, but replaced with a traditional “Shoji” screen to control strong daylight by Japanese way. “Shoji” screen made of rice paper and thin wood frame tend to be distorted under the air conditioning, so I made very thin frame by extruded aluminum wrapped up with sliced wood was so stable and durable.

Gold foil lighting

I carefully designed luxury Japanese style pendant lamp and coffered lighting by use of gold foil to evoke brilliant cultural image of “Edo” period. Pendant lamp hanged upon sleek Italian design has a gold leaf sandwiched with papers.  Apricot flower shaped coffered lighting has gold plated inside reflector is a decorative element of “Edo” period in this rather modern simple interiors.

“Sen” flooring

Very light and fine grained timber flooring furnished here is custom made by Japanese “Sen” to give very soft feeling same as “Tatami” straw mat.
