The project concerns a 6,300 sq m private parcel in Tarcento (Udine), located in Via Oltretorre, a neighbourhood of noble houses built in the early 20th century. There existed three significant buildings on the property: the main house, the annex and the greenhouse, distributed across a mixed topography of level and steeply sloped terrain.

The scope of the project encompassed the entire property, including the design of  open spaces and a park, the introduction of a new garage built into the hillside, and the project for the main house. The latter involved the demolition of a large addition to the main house, the construction of a new more appropriate extension against the main house, and the structural renovation and partial restoration of the historic part of the building.

By redefining the formal relationship between the two volumes, the character of the overall complex was radically modified. Unlike the previous addition, the new extension does not compete with the main house.

The new façades are stepped back, thus freeing up the corners and the newly restored historic building. The choice of colours, white for the main house and black for the extension, accentuate the difference in character between the two volumes. The slope of the zinc roof in the new extension is the same as that of the clay tile roof in the opposite annex building. This helps the extension ‘belong’ to the ‘whole’ of the buildings and the park. The main house and the extension differ in their relationship with the exterior, the main house being a ‘closed’ volume, and the extension being open to the surrounding environment.

An axis created by the main circulation path gives structure and unity to the entire project, accentuated by the fact that the extension maintains the same floor levels as the historic building. This axis starts from the street front, cuts through the two buildings and fades into the park.The vertical circulation elements are located at the contact point between the two buildings. The project also included the introduction of a new garage, which was nestled into the wooded hillside. Its only exposed façade was built with reinforced concrete, using cane in the formwork panels. The resulting finish texture creates a ‘vibrant’ effect in the sunlight, and is perfectly harmonious with the surrounding vegetation.

The buildings and open spaces were all tied together with an entirely redesigned overall plan. The woody character of the sloping portion of the site was accentuated, while earthworks hide the new garage completely. This way, the complexity and quality of the whole area is preserved.

L’intervento riguarda un terreno privato di 6.300 mq a Tarcento (Ud), situato in via Oltretorre, in una zona di case nobili inizio novecento. Sulla proprietà si trovano tre edifici di grande qualità: la casa nobile principale, la dependance e la serra, disposti su un terreno in parte pianeggiante e in parte in forte pendenza.

Il progetto riguarda l’intera proprietà, con il disegno degli spazi aperti e del parco, l’inserimento di una nuova autorimessa nella collina e il progetto per la casa padronale.

L’intervento sulla casa principale ha previsto la demolizione di una grande “superfetazione” verso la collina e la realizzazione di un nuovo ampliamento in aderenza alla casa originaria, oltre alla ristrutturazione e parziale restauro della parte storica dell’edificio.

I rapporti formali tra i due corpi sono stati ridefiniti, modificando radicalmente il carattere dell’insieme. Il nuovo volume costruito, al contrario della superfetazione precedente, non si pone mai in competizione con il fabbricato storico: i nuovi fronti vengono arretrati, liberando così gli angoli. La scelta cromatica del bianco per l’edificio restaurato e del nero per l’ampliamento accentuano il diverso carattere dei due volumi. Il tetto a falde inclinate in zinco (con la stessa pendenza del tetto della prospiciente dependance in mattoni) assicura la “appartenenza” del nuovo ampliamento ad un “insieme”, costituito dagli edifici e dal parco.

Il progetto evidenzia differenti rapporti con l’esterno fra il volume “chiuso” preesistente e l’ampliamento aperto all’ambiente circostante.

L’asse di percorrenza (accentuato dalla conservazione delle stesse quote di solaio dell’edificio storico) che taglia trasversalmente i due manufatti e, partendo dalla strada, si perde nel parco, lega e struttura l’intera idea progettuale. Nel punto di contatto tra i due edifici si trovano gli elementi di distribuzione verticali.

Il progetto affronta anche il tema della nuova autorimessa “incastrandola” nel bosco. Collocata a fianco della serra nell’angolo est del terreno, è parzialmente interrata nella collina e integrata nel disegno del parco. L’unica facciata è realizzata in calcestruzzo a faccia a vista, usando come matrici dei pannelli cannicciati, ottenendo così una superficie del calcestruzzo molto “vibrante” alla luce e perfettamente integrata con la vegetazione.

Un grande disegno complessivo unisce tutti gli spazi aperti e gli edifici; il parco è stato interamente ripensato, accentuando il carattere di bosco della parte in pendenza e caratterizzando il grande prato sottostante con movimenti del terreno tali da nascondere completamente la nuova autorimessa, mantenendo la complessità e la qualità di tutto l’insieme.
