Edmund

Edmund is a one-off room at the new Volkshotel in Amsterdam. In the middle of the room several elements made of wood and rubber have been clustered into a mountain inspired shape. A dazzling mountainscape panorama covers the walls.

The free-standing mountain contains all the functionality like bed, bathroom and wardrobe. Integrated stairs take you to the absolute highlight, a pinnacle bathtub with adjacent cactus garden.

Edmund was designed by Amsterdam based architects Jos Blom and Jasper Eustace. This project was assigned to Jos and Jasper after they won a competition calling for a unique hotel room design.

Starting point of the design was the idea to introduce just one object in the room that facilitates all the rooms basic needs. At the same time this object gives form to the surrounding leftover space. That the bathtub was supposed to be on top of all this was very clear from the start.

The main object was divided into separate blocks, each having their own function (resulting in seperate blocks for the bed, bath, beamer, stairs, toilet, garden and the wardrobe). Measurements of the rooms entrance were taken into account shaping these blocks. This way they could be prefabricated in the shop.

The blocks were constructed of birch ply with a pine veneer. The rubber is commonly used as flooring, parts of it have a circular anti-slip profile. It gives the bathing area a nice soft touch.
