SPEEDO HQ Nottingham. A design philosophy.
We started by answering a question posed by the client. “How do we allow our personnel to create workspace environments that are more personal to the individual, yet at the same time, allow the same personnel to be, and feel, part of the whole workplace environment?”
The solution, which involves a large percentage of open-planned accommodation, demanded considerable open-mindedness on the part of the management team, to whom cellular office spaces were the norm.
Through design team meetings, question and answer sessions, the assessment of current working conditions and practices and trial and error space planning on paper, a more agile way of working was devised that encouraged interaction through the utilisation of ‘third spaces’ (circulation spaces, printing zones, water fountain locations, kitchen facilities, dining area, storage walls and recycling areas). These ‘third spaces’ are considered as the glue that holds workspaces together. Opportunities to introduce seating for informal or more formal meetings, for the use of hand held technology, or for just standing and thinking in, are incorporated into these areas. Combined with the creative use of supergraphics on walls and storage unit fronts that reinforce the Speedo brand, the interior architecture and design promotes through its openness, light, colour and use of contemporary materials, a progressive youthful company attitude.
