A modern twist to an existing mundane brick cape built in 1949 proved to be both a structural and architectural challenge. I think the results were successful. We created an up-side-down house - moving the master bedroom into the existing living room on the first floor and creating a loft like open plan for the living - dining - kitchen areas above. To further take advantage of the Hudson River views, a roof top terrace is accessed from a cantilevered exterior stair off the second floor. What was a small, cramped and dark house became an open, bright and expansive.
