“Centro de ocio Chiloé” is a touristic complex, built entirely using endemic wood from the south of Chile; Focusing on the relax and comfort of it's visitors, and aiming to provide true leisure time surrounded by nature and admiring from the height the city of Castro and it's fjord.

The complex is located in the archipelago of Chiloé, 16 Km north east of Castro, in the peninsula of Rilan. It is built on top of over 20 hectares of prairies and forests following these two guidelines:

First: The project would be composed of independent buildings, scaled accordingly to the place, in order to achieve low impact in the landscape as well as giving the customer the chance to experience the complex in several different ways.

Second: Each building would be connected by natural pathways passing through Myrtle (Arrayán) forests and prairies; There would also be several viewpoints and other facilities present during the walk as breakpoints in order to admire the landscape and wildlife.

To make this possible we created 3 large groups:

The “Hotel territorial”, comprised of 7 buildings and inspired in the forces of nature:

- 1 building for the Reception, lobby and dinning room next to the fire.

- 3 rooms inspired in the natural elements and properly insulated for a more private and comfortable experience; Wind, is built vertically focusing on wide spaces and a terrace to provide an astonishing view. Earth, carved into the side of a hill built focusing on just one material and simulating the light conditions and shape of a cavern. Forest, built in 2 large leafs on top of the trees.

- 6 rooms rotating around the view of the fjord of Castro focusing on specific spots, from the channel of Lemuy to the wetland, host of Chilean flamingos and black-necked swans.

“Conjunto Rural”: The original house was restored, includes a barbecue, guest house, roosts, and apple trees, within 5 hectares of prairie used for sheep grazing, allows the visitors to 'live' in the way it is regularly done in Chiloé as well as sharing some of the local traditions.

“El Bosque”: Right next to the river and surrounded by native vegetation, several pathways can be distinguished, these connect the viewpoints, saunas, and bathtubs, giving our visitors the chance to move around and rest.

The construction techniques used, are based in the woodcraft culture of Chiloé, all the buildings are supported by wooden pillars made from Pilgerodendron (ciprés de las Guaitecas). The structure, coating, window frames, and furniture, are made of Canelo, Tepa, Tenio, Mañio, Cipres, and Fizroya, all native woods, as well as sheep wool, creating comfortable and warm spaces where the cold and grey landscape of the island can be admired.

All the structures were built following ecological design guidelines, such as the use of pasive solar radiation, wind flow, and rain fall, in order to minimize the negative impact in the environment and reduce the operational costs, as a result, the project has been awarded by “Servicio Nacional de Turismo (SERCOTEC)” with the “Sustainable tourism award” in 2014.
