The second project completed by the Elenberg Fraser Graduate Programme team the project saw them undertake the design and where possible assembly of the Front of House fit out for the first Adriano Zumbo store in Melbourne. Location Located in the corner tenancy of Lilli in Claremont St, South Yarra the Adriano Zumbo store completes the retail component of the Ground Floor of the development. Brief: The brief involved the design of all the internal shell of the front of house component of the store as well as the furniture, signage & the window treatment. The design brief was very open to the graduates with the only proviso to be true to the brand of Zumbo the team interpreted this as to be playful, innovative & a little bit pink. The main design challenges stemmed from taking the design concept & developing a method to actually construct this in reality. The team researched methods of how to create a surface that would appear like molded mirror that would be able to be easily constructed into a panelised wall & ceiling treatment. Through development & experimentation with a team of enthusiastic manufacturers the process was developed. The wall and ceiling panels are created through the use of vacuum formed polycarbonate panels which are heated for varying amounts of time to create slumped panels of different depths. The mirror finish is created by vacuum metalizing where the panels are exposed to vaporised aluminium that adheres to the panel. The process is an example of taking different techniques not typically used for these purposes and using them to create a new method to produce a desired design result. Elenberg Fraser is a multidisciplinary firm and this project enabled young staff members from across the whole firm to engage in the project. The ambient glow of Zumbo’s signature hot pink branding within the store is a result of the mirrored panels interacting with a radiant pink Neon sign in the rear of the space. The firm’s graphics team designed a custom font for the neon which references the existing Zumbo branding whilst also creating a unique identify for this store. Also part of the graphics team’s brief was to design and commission the vinyl graphics to the exterior windows. The treatment reads like melting chocolate that oozes from the tops and bottoms of the windows to help frame the action going on inside the store. Complimenting both the liquid nature of the vinyl graphic & the playful nature of Adriano’s products, a series of eccentric furniture pieces were also designed by the talented young interior designers at Elenberg Fraser. Up-cycled furniture was re-purposed into bench seats, then layered with self-expanding foam and finished in dripping pink & white silicon. Fitting for the sweet nature of the store the effect appears much like oozing marshmallows, dripping gelato or sandwich cakes drenched in icing.
