"Passage" is the graduation project from Esther Jongsma. She graduated in 2013 from the Design Academy in Eindhoven. The moment you walk over the carpet, the pattern is moving. This will make you aware of your own movement and you have an interacting with the object. Esther is fascinated by barriers and passing them. From this fascination she established the carpet. The pattern arises in the technique. She has chosen the insertion of wood because in the past wooden floors where the ones with patterns. With the relatively new laser cutting technology it became easier to apply. But there are many other applications possible. The essence of a carpet is that it defines a space. It creates borders without walls. But why should a carpet or floor only exist in two dimensions? And should it always be from fabric? This is what this wooden carpet shows. It is made using an old technique of making patterns in floors but it is given new meaning by building it in two layers which can communicate a message that depends on the movement of a person. The material gives new possibilities for applications.
