The University of Crete was founded in 1973 and nowadays is considered the best in Greece and the 145-th in the World. In 2011 the World Union of Architects announced a competition to design a bioclimatic school at the university. Design of the school of the new eco-consciousness level continues the traditions of compositional modelling of educational institutions, which are traceable in the palaces of Knossos and Festus. The building uses wind and solar energy for autonomous life support. School students perceive sustainable development on applied examples from little up. There are mini organic farm, anaerobic, wind, solar, algae, piezoelectric power generators in the school area.
