- Conversion from a derelict cellar to a contemporary loft - A remarkable conversion project brought new life to this cavernous cellar dating back to 1600's. Despite the initial overwhelming sense of dereliction, the potential of the space to be converted into a funky urban loft, in the true American sense of the term, was evident. Incredibly, the rare webbed type original beams which span the entire space were intact, and after careful sanding and conservative treatment, became the centrepiece in the new living area together with three arches of exposed brick and stone. The customised staircase leading to a partially glazed mezzanine floor, serving as a art gallery and studio for the owner, required a design which did not obscure the overall view. This was critical to the aesthetic impact of the project. Frosted glass wall partitions separate the two bathrooms from the living area. Glazing and trasparency become leitmotivs in the project where natural light is limited. This material is utilised again for a bespoke bath and huge acquarium, strategically placed in the ground floor bathroom partially visible in the living area.
