Melanie is the founder of global design firm Karu, offering a unique global point of view with the digital design process reimagined. Karu seamlessly connects clients to an exclusive interior architecture vision and handcrafted ‘Made in Italy’ selections to create poetic, atmospheric experiences. Our American business sense combined with Italian rigor and attention to detail makes even the largest projects maintain a boutique feel. We work with our clients intimately to create spaces that perfectly align with their vision and business goals. Each project begins with careful research from printed and digital archives to ensure each project is 100% unique and academically correct. We do not subscribe to trending styles and design timelessly and sustainably for a better world. We give back to up-and-coming black designers through scholarships and masterclasses to elevate their opportunities because #blacklivesmatter.

Melanie has spent the last decade creating immersive architectural environments and furniture for a wide range of luxury clients, developers, and brands around the world. Her tenure with Gensler in Los Angeles and Newport Beach, and training under Italian Master Piero Lissoni in Milan, enabled her to build a body of work that is nuanced, poetic and atmospherically unique. Her design process is inspired by a sense of rigor and depth in design thinking, comprised of a range of expertise and skills to realise an imitable bespoke aesthetic. Melanie holds a Master’s and a Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Architecture and Design from the US, and studied Architecture and Art History in Florence, Italy.

Living in Milan, Melanie is immersed in a special kind of creative energy where designers are constantly pushing new, interesting work forward. Her travels in Japan, Italy, Spain, France, Monaco, Morocco, and abroad have strongly influenced her design process, entrepreneurial spirit, and unique methodology. She and her work have been featured on Architectural Digest Magazine, Interior Design Magazine, Boutique Design Magazine, and Melanie has been a speaker at the Boutique Design New York conference.
