After eight years of living and working on Lamu Island, Urko and his family moved to set up an office and home in Mombasa. “I was looking for new experiences and new opportunities both personally and professionally. I wanted to draw and design things I hadn’t done yet, things on different scales with different materials,” remembers Urko. “And so I established in Mombasa and set up Urko Sanchez Architects.”

Featuring a well-honed multicultural team with both local and international track records, Urko Sanchez Architects has designed and constructed many successful projects along the coast of Kenya. The firm’s architectural mandate is that a building should express where it is from, whether it is at the coast or in a forest, whether on Lamu Island or in Somaliland, whether a hotel or private getaway, whether traditional or modern in style.
