Office JDY

Office JDY was founded in 2018 by Daniel Selensky and Yannik Neufang, friends united in optimistic inquiry. Our work is informed by an innate sensitivity to each project’s unique potential and the ability to interpret between the lines. We are interested in acts of facility which make room for respectful discourse, collective solutions, and rich personal engagement with our clients and collaborators – all in service of producing engrossing and unconventional experiences for users. In writing this, we prioritize a commitment to both creativity and pragmatism. Ours is a place of practice, an office for dreaming as well as doing.

Our process is one of discovery and indulges in the unfamiliar and the unexpected. We place great importance on avoiding preconceptions, but also on research, on learning, on attentiveness, and on tinkering. In our work, considerations of scale, proportion, juncture, and alignment are supported by an ardent appreciation for materiality and craftsmanship. Though our method is decidedly contemporary, the result is less easily categorized.

We contend that details, in both design and management, are paramount in the creation of beautiful architecture, and we spend an inordinate amount of time studying not just a multitude of potential outcomes but also how best to reach them. Accordingly, a focus on the management and oversight of each project, from conceptualization through construction, is integral to our practice.

Our obsession with quality also forms the basis for our approach to sustainability. The issue of longevity as it relates to both aesthetics and durability, and the notion that things should be designed and built well, with as few resources as possible and to last as long as possible, are foundational concepts which concern us on every project.
