The architecture firm Lechner & Lechner has been engaged in a diverse spectrum of architectural challenges and inquiries since 1987. From the outset, our practice has been deeply rooted in addressing the interplay between architecture and historical contexts, as well as exploring the multifaceted dimensions of sustainable design. A fundamental tenet of our work is the preservation and enhancement of the European city’s functions, paired with a commitment to countering urban sprawl by integrating and interconnecting the spaces where people live, work, and thrive.
Over decades of practice, we have cultivated expertise across a wide array of construction methodologies. Our dedication to sustainability has enabled us to pioneer numerous projects, particularly in timber construction, including urban contexts requiring spatial densification through innovative timber-hybrid systems. At the core of our design ethos lies a steadfast commitment to optimizing spatial quality—this principle serves as the benchmark for every decision we make in our architectural endeavors.
Founded in 1987 by Christine and Horst Lechner, the practice underwent a significant transformation in 2015 when it was re-established as "lechner – lechner – lechner ZT gmbh" following the passing of Horst Josef Lechner (1959). The firm is now led by Christine Lechner, Paul Lechner, and Horst Michael Lechner (1991), who serve as stakeholders.
Our collaborative journey with architect Johannes Schallhammer began in the late 1990s during our engagement with the Chair of Urban Design at ETH Zurich. Since 2000, we have shared a work and office collective at our mutual location on Priesterhausgasse in Salzburg. This partnership not only enriches our own architectural pursuits but also enables us to co-develop a variety of projects, fostering a culture of shared creativity and innovation.
