KAL A
Architecture Firm Madrid / Spain
Based in Madrid since 2017, KAL A is currently led by Miguel Sotos and Sofia Romeo. The studio combines architectural practice with carpentry and landscape study, focusing on providing solutions through a slow process in which they collaborate with small local industries, craftsmen and an extensive production of details and furniture pieces made in their own workshop. KAL A develops their practice through public and private commissions for housing, mixed-use and social projects.
During their first years of activity, they have gained recognition through architectural competitions such as
the First Prize in the Competition for the construction of the Bohinj nursery school (2020) together with ARREA Arhitektura or the Third Prize in the Project Competition
for the Rehabilitation of the Royal Spanish Academy in Rome (2022). They have also been recognised for their work by the EUMies Awards 2024 (40 Shortlisted), the Piranesi Award 2023 (Honourable Mention), the Grand Prix Balkan Architecture Biennale 2023, and awarded at Premios COAM Emerging Architecture and FAD International Awards 2024. Their work has been exhibited in Ecosistemas.Zip: Spain's next generation under 35'
(Sala Amadís, 2022, Casa de la Arquitectura, 2023). Also, they are actively involved in publishing projects through Calmo Editions.
