Established in 1985, Steven Harris Architects LLP (“SHA”) is an award-winning design firm with extensive and varied experience in residential, commercial, and institutional projects. In particular, the firm is known for projects at the top of the residential architecture market, from Hamptons homes to 109 E 79, a newly built 20-story condominium on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. All this work is informed by the firm’s more than three decades of work on historic New York City townhouses.

Steven Harris is a Professor of Architecture at Yale University with 30+ years of teaching experience. His former students form the majority of the firm’s 22 architects and designers.

SHA takes a collaborative approach to design, fostering an open exchange of ideas both within the firm and with clients. The design process tailors individually to the client’s program, context, and site; because of this, each project takes on a unique character and appearance. Renowned for meticulous, detailed design and well-crafted projects, SHA involves the client in an engaged and mutual way; the process is one of constant refinement from the initial inquiry through the end of construction.

Clients have commended the two firms for “flawless execution and project management” that is “respectful of budgets” and particularly noted for using uncanny “creativity towards … design solutions.” From start to finish, SHA demonstrates a strong commitment to the design process of each residence, aiming to preserve the integrity of the project’s vision throughout its life. The firm prides itself on being open to questions from all parties to help ensure the project’s successful completion. SHA has worked seamlessly with many interior designers, including Studio Shamshiri, Atelier AM, Pierre Yovanovitch, and its longtime partner Rees Roberts + Partners (“RRP”) to ensure a thorough, innovative, and highly functional scheme.

SHA has successfully renovated dozens of landmark properties protected by, among other entities, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission and the National Register of Historic Places. The firm is especially noted for its ability to meet client needs while maintaining a building’s historic character. Notable finished or ongoing renovations include the A. Conger Goodyear House, the Mrs. Graham Fair Vanderbilt House, the David Rockefeller House, and a renovated 15th century monastery complex in Croatia. It has successfully received approval from the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission on over 150 projects.

SHA is a longstanding member of the Architectural Digest 100, the world’s preeminent list of top designers. It has also been elected to the Luxe Gold List and the Interior Design Hall of Fame. Its work has been regularly recognized for excellence by the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects and Interior Design Magazine’s Best of Year awards. Their work has been highlighted in numerous periodicals – including: Wallpaper, Town and Country, Details, Robb Report, In Style, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Interior Design, Elle Décor, and Architectural Digest – and has been featured in several recent books, including Restoring a House in the City, New York City Gardens, Mod Mirage, Houses on Difficult Sites, American Dream: The Houses at Sagaponack and 30 Years of Emerging Voices. SHA’s monograph, True Life, was published with the Princeton University Press.
