Studio J. Jih is a multidisciplinary design practice founded by J.Jih in Boston, MA. The studio operates in dialogue, engaging different facets of experience to create dynamic and accessible spaces. The studio’s projects are united by an interest in the architectural figure, that is, the use of sculptural forms that envelop the body, choreograph movement through space, and that foster curiosity and delight.
J. Jih (they/them) is a Lecturer in architectural design at MIT, where their teaching philosophy and research center on the construction of architectural form through material systems, complex geometry, choreography, behavior, and identity. J.’s academic interests explore the architectural figure through questions of identity and materiality.
Prior to founding J. Jih, J. worked for Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Howeler+Yoon Architecture, and IwamotoScott. They received their Masters of Architecture in 2012 from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where they were awarded the Faculty Design Award for Design Excellence. They hold a B.A. in Architectural Studies and Sculpture from Brown University, Magna cum Laude, with Honors, and studied at the Architectural Association in London. In 2014, they received the Rotch Traveling Scholarship, an endowed scholarship which funds one architect to travel and research architecture around the world for eight months. J. has also lectured at the University of Pennsylvania and is a member of the AIA.
