DECA Architecture is an architectural team founded in 2001 by Carlos Loperena (Mexico, 1970) and Alexandros Vaitsos (Peru, 1971). Loperena and Vaitsos met during their postgraduate studies at UC Berkeley. Before they met, Loperena studied industrial design at the University of Kansas (B.F.A., 1995, honors) and Vaitsos studied Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University (B.A., 1995). Both have taught architectural design at the University of Thessaly, the University of Patras.
The work of DECA Architecture focuses on two main axes: The sustainable integration of human needs in the environment that hosts them, and the stimulation of the human senses beyond the barriers of familiarity. DECA has studied over 100 projects in Europe with a wide range of topics: Anthropogeographical surveys of the urban environment, sustainability studies of the Greek countryside, urban regeneration proposals, museum studies, housing studies, tourism infrastructure studies, object design and digital site design.
