About US
BAU is an architecture, urban design, urban planning, and landscape architecture practice driven by values embedded in progressive eastern and western philosophies. Our design processes, practice, and projects include an understanding and appreciation of international design practice and culture. Founded in 1992 in Melbourne Australia, today BAU has offices in Australia and China. Led by partners James Brearley and Fang Qun, BAU is a multi-disciplinary team integrating all aspects of the built environment. At BAU we are focused on innovative solutions to contemporary built environment issues to achieve multi-dimensional design outcomes that are not only environmentally sustainable but, culturally, socially, and economically sustainable as well. Cost effective built environments that promote the engagement of its citizens, not only with all the city has to offer, but also with each other.
Green Architecture
BAU has a strong sense of social responsibility, encompassing environmentally sustainable design, a focus on public benefit from private projects, and a rich diversity of place making design.
Book publication
Networks Cities was co-authored by BAU founders James Brearley and Fang Qun, published in 2010. The book focuses on the original design theory of “Networks Cities”. Networks Cities contributes to understanding the difficulties and present strategies of Chinese urban planning. It proposes cities rich in fine scaled pure and hybrid zoning; cities designed for walking convenience and proximity and public transit; and cities that re-establish networks of ecology.
Beginning to End; Inside and Beyond
BAU follow each and every project from inception stage through CD stage and throughout construction stage. Our built projects are all within a short travel time of our Shanghai office to enable regular and frequent site visits and client communication. Our capacity to design and see through the urban design, architecture, interior, and landscape further enables projects of a high caliber.
Horizontal Structure
The BAU studio is a democratic space where all voices are heard and all design ideas are welcome. Our designers are each involved from design inception until the fully built completed project. The partners direct, edit and assist the teams from beginning to end.
