Established in 2012, DEUTSU was founded by Björn Bertheau and Ulrich Bähring in Munich, Germany. DEUTSU is a design studio where diverse disciplines are conjoined – an experimental laboratory, a carpenter’s & metal workshop, a prototyping & furniture manufacture and an architecture office. Its philosophy is to create timeless design that is sustainable, durable, environmentally friendly and made to last. One key message of DEUTSU is, “To handover worthy furniture to the next generations.“ DEUTSU produces consistent high quality contemporary and progressive design made of high-grade materials. Its collections are manufactured with both traditional and innovative handcraft production methods. The aim of DEUTSU is to offer distinct and unique collections that are compatible and combinable with diverse modern interior settings. DEUTSU manufactures its products almost exclusively made-to-order. DEUTSU works closely with a network of local craftsmen to preserve, enhance and develop traditional methods and skills and contributes to the preservation of traditional craft. The Name DEUTSU is originated from the Japanese word for “deutsches” which means “German”. DEUTSU refers to the co-founders background, to combine craftsmanship and creative design skills with the experiences from Germany and Japan as well as meet the standard ”Made in Germany”.
