The firm’s research trajectories often focus on mining materials and ideas from contexts that are most ‘accessible’, both physically and conceptually. Physically, Taylor and Miller are active participants in their projects’ fabrication, and this participation often starts with a seemingly mundane palette of materials; manila rope, fishing line, 4x6” aluminum flashing, or aircraft cable. The firm considers the actions that are taken to modify these materials as the real process of the architecture.
In this context, the architecture becomes a composition of verbs; not nouns. These verbs describe the number of operations done in sequence to create a particular physical conclusion. If the firm started with the same materials and modified the order of operations, a much different effect would be created. In essence, the conclusion of these actions in sequence leaves only a memory of their existence through the material.
In the same way that Taylor and Miller looks to re-evaluate basic materials with divergent processes of assembly and operation, the firm’s written research has also tended towards existing popular notions of architecture. For the firm, this type of study symbolizes the same basic principles of the material studies; a very simple something that has a number of possible design trajectories… only if explored.
