Vertical Garden Design was started by Swedish landscape architect Michael Hellgren. Characteristic for VGD’s projects is searching for unique design solutions with large number of plant species to create alive and vibrant ambiances. Great care is taken to understand natural vertical landscapes with study trips done on a regular basis, bringing knowledge and inspiration to interpret nature’s wildness in the very urban locations the gardens often are located in.
Hellgren studied at SLU in Uppsala, Sweden and École d’architecture et de paysage de Bordeaux, France. The first project in Stockholm 2004 has been followed by both indoor and outdoor projects in a number of locations around the world - e.g. Barcelona, Dubai, Beijing, Florence, Abu Dhabi and Oslo. After starting the office in Stockholm, Hellgren has been based several years in Barcelona and Lisbon and is currently working between these places.
