Ian McChesney works alongside designers, developers and landowners to create large scale functional artworks for their buildings and open spaces.

He is currently working on eight granite benches in Granary Square London for Developer Argent, other commissions include a pair of granite forms at Plymouth University and his most high profile commission to date ‘Out of the Strong Came Forth Sweetness’ a striking installation in the Angel Building London for developer Derwent London.

Following its completion in 2010 the Angel building won many awards and was short listed for the Stirling prize, the building quickly attracted a full complement of prestigious and astute tenants including the Design Council.

Ian is a qualified with some notable buildings to his name but recent commissions have come in the form of large scale sculptures which often have a functional use. Ian brings his experience of complex construction projects to the creation of these works, something his collaborators and clients particularly value.

Ian works directly on all his projects so that absolute control is maintained. Techniques involve hand drawing, hand model building and computer modelling to design the pieces which are then fabricated by specialist artisans or fabricators.

Much of Ian’s recent work involves the creation of very pure forms at large scale redolent of processes of wear or distortion by forces of nature. He works in simple monolithic materials with recent work moving towards more naturally occurring materials such as stone and ceramics.
