Urban Salon

Urban Salon are an innovative architecture and design studio based in London. We embrace diversity, designing buildings, interiors, exhibitions and products. We work across a wide range of sectors including retail, museums, offices, housing and education. Our varied work is united by a desire to use design strategically to drive positive change. We use design to deliver the results clients need, whether turning a family brewery into a leading visitor attraction as we did for Robinsons in Stockport, or taking the stigma out of visiting a sexual health facility as at the Burrell Street Sexual Health Centre in London. In all projects we work closely with clients to get to know their business, their priorities and the needs of their customers before coming up with a design-led solution. We have built up a particular expertise in temporary exhibitions for major cultural institutions and enjoy the intellectual challenges of communicating the often complex exhibition subject matter to diverse audiences. But we are equally at home responding to the commercial issues facing retail clients such as Marks & Spencer and Three Mobile, for whom we designed new store concepts. Our multi-disciplinary team works across a variety of scales from a range of ironmongery to a multi-million pound urban block development in Bermondsey for Igloo Regeneration. We were recently selected for inclusion on housing provider Peabody’s Small Projects Panel. Led by creative director Alex Mowat, our high quality design solutions are a response to the brief in hand rather than an expression of any house style. However all our designs are robust with an emphasis on elegant simplicity and carefully chosen, sustainable natural materials. Since we set up Urban Salon in 1996 our work has won more than 40 awards and commendations including two RIBA Regional Awards. We are currently designing the National Gallery’s forthcoming major exhibition on Rembrandt and improving the visitor journey at the Grade I listed Tower Bridge.
