Makoto Yamaguchi Design

Makoto Yamaguchi is a Japanese architect who first gained notoriety for his 'Villa / Gallery in Karuizawa'. His practice has completed an extensive variety of built work ranging from commercial office and public work, to private residences through to product design in both Japan and abroad. His portfolio of work has received many awards for example; the aforementioned 'Villa / Gallery in Karuizawa', was published widely and recognized as the best residential project in the world in 2004 by the internationally published Wallpaper* magazine while the "House in Komae" project was awarded by the Chicago Atheneum, (a museum dedicated to art and design) in 2008 as one of the best designs of the year worldwide. His philosophy is that rather than providing a standard repeatable design, that original problems must be solved in original ways. He does not aim to simply look different or peculiar but by responding sensitively to the clients desires and needs he is able to provide special and unique designs that go above and beyond their expectations. As as a result of this philosophy the practices work has received much acclaim and continues to receive numerous domestic and international architecture awards. His work is widely recognized for its originality and subtle aesthetics.
