Arper history. From leather chairs to contract design

The history of Arper begins in 1989, when Luigi Feltrin together with his two sons Mauro and Claudio transform what was once an artisan business mainly focused on leather processing, into an international reality specialized in office, home and hospitality furnishing production. The pieces hallmark is a strong design orientation, never exaggerated, but always functional to the use and comfort of the complement. The concept underlying Feltrins production comes down to six crucial points, namely balance, family, intuition, lightness, color and play. Moreover, each one of Arper’s products is carefully taken care of all along its production cycle from the project design up to its expected environmental impact. Since the late ‘90s the production has abandoned its extremely sector-specific character centered on leather chairs to open up to iconic pieces which are still present in the catalog nowadays and that carry the signature of world-class artists such as the Lievore Altherr Molina studio, Jean-Marie Massaud, Simon Pengelly and Ichiro Iwasaki. The company today is particularly focused on the contract sector, with a production diversified according to different market segments, but always keeping in mind the pillars at the basis of each creation; color, flexibility, adaptability, the pleasure of ergonomic shapes. Eleven showrooms around the world, a distribution network spread in ninety countries and around 250 employees establish Arper on the international panorama, a source of prestige for Italy

The sustainable design of Arper products

The stemming idea for each of Arper’s products is that the world it designs is the one they wish to live in. This is only possible if environmental impact is limited. To stay loyal to such a commitment, in 2005 the company set up a branch taking specific care of sustainability, where policies and quality standards are set not only referring to production, but also for the working environment to be always healthy for the workers. This commitment is also witnessed by the number of certifications assuring the customers and workers that the efforts made go in the right direction. Since 2007 Arper has been applying the Life Cycle Assessment for some of its collections. The aim is to examine every step of production, from when materials are chosen, till the pieces are manufactured; from transport to use, up until the possible disposal. The underlying concept of this sensitivity is reflected also in the design and in the principle that a “well done” product is one with a longer life, that keeps unmodified its quality over the years and which design stays cutting edge!
