Estas máximas significam projectar o que não se vê, para mostrar o que não é construído: isto é, criar elementos básicos e relações simples entre estes elementos, ocultando as soluções técnicas, para que o material não protagonize a obra. O protagonismo fica assim reservado aos significados: interior e exterior, claro e escuro, opaco e transparente, quente e frio, singular e plural, estático e dinâmico.
