MAPS Design, founded in 1996, is a global design practice led by its founding principal Tan Hock Beng. With offices in Singapore and Bangkok, it has always been broad based in the geographic breadth of its work, generating thought provoking solutions for its discriminating clientele from vastly varied cultural contexts. The firm provides comprehensive master-planning, architectural and interior design services for many building types, although its key projects are in hospitality. It has prestigious projects ranging from resorts to urban hotels in 20 countries across more than 60 cities, including Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Seychelles, Mongolia, Tokyo, China, India, Middle East, Maldives, Spain, London and Hawaii. These projects have been widely published in various international journals and exhibited in different countries and venues including Tokyo, Costa Rica, and the prestigious Venice Biennale in Venice. The firm has also been honoured many international awards including “Best Spanish Design 2004” and the prestigious American Institute of Architects’ “Design Excellence in Architecture Award 2004”, “Excellence in Interior Design Award 2004” and “Excellence in Landscape Architecture Award” as well as the “Award of Merit”. Its project Ista Hyderabad, India, won the Hot Spas 2008 and Top New Hotels 2008 awarded by Conde Nast Traveler, while its W Retreat Koh Samui garnered the Top New Hotels 2010. The practice is built around a distinctive way of thinking, hence it is widely recognised as a “thinking” firm that sees design as “intelligence made visible”.
