Marimekko is a Finnish company from Helsinki. Especially during the 1960s Marimekko has been endorsing a liaison between design and fashion. Today the company is internationally known for printed fabrics in bright colors and simple style, used for both female clothing and home furnishings.
Marimekko was founded 1951 by Viljo and Armi Ratia who had asked some of their artist friends to use their graphical projects for printing fabrics. The company then started selling a line of simple dresses and organized very successful fashion shows. Some of the best known Marimekko fabrics date back to those years too, for instance Unikko, by Maija Isola, and Jokapoika, by Vuokko Nurmesniemi.
The famous patterns of these fabrics were also used in a line of bathroom accessories, for decorating kitchen accessories, tableware and bedclothes. Marimekko products are distributed worldwide by a network of retailers, outlets and stores.
