The spatial articulation reinterprets the theme of the agricultural use of slopes

LFL architetti, a firm comprising Luconi architetti associati, Fumagalli Sergio architetto and Lavorincorso architetti, recently completed a Single-family house in Postalesio, near Sondrio in Italy, built on the site of a disused industrial building.

The geometry of the lot, with its elongated shape and the previously existing basement storage space suggested placing a large amount items - spa pool, basement room, technical and service rooms - at basement level to take advantage of the sloping topography of the land.

The result is a series of terraces, reinterpreting the theme of agricultural exploitation of the valley slopes, revealing a succession of Luserna stone walls and hanging gardens that conceal much of the built-up areas, making only the residential volume visible.

This determines a dual articulation of the functional spaces: the basement ones, arranged on progressive split levels, are distributed over the entire length of the buildable lot. The truly “domestic” ones: living area and sleeping area, are organized within a single compact volume, articulated on the double-height centre of gravity which houses the distribution system.

The architectural language changes and interprets the typical local materials delineating them according to the typological and functional organization of the building: stone cladding for the terraces and the base of the house, whitewash for the intermediate level, natural larch wooden slats for the top level, used as a sleeping area.

The pool/spa space benefits from natural light coming from a long skylight that provides spellbinding light effects on the natural ashlar cladding. The basement room too, despite being entirely below ground level is extremely light thanks to a large open light shaft on the eastern edge. The energy class A building adopts renewable energy (geothermal - solar thermal heat pump) and a sophisticated home automation system for controlling and managing the systems.
