For its 6th edition, l’appartement N°50 welcomes Alessandro Mendini. The italian Maestro succeeds Jasper Morrison, Ronan& Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic, Pierre Charpin and l’ECAL (Ecole Cantonale d’art de Lausanne).
Alessandro Mendini created the Summer installation of the Appartement N°50 in the Unité d’Habitation of Le CORBUSIER in Marseille.
On the narrow South façade of the Unité d’Habitation, an apartment listed as « Historical Monument » since 1985 opens its door to the public, for a summer Design exhibition. The idea is to confront the Le Corbusier heritage to the vision of a Designer, by sharing the keys of this place kept in its historical authenticity.
With CORBU, 8 COLORS Alessandro Mendini has interpreted the space of this unique apartment with a great sensitivity and poetry.
His work will interact with the Original Equipments of CHARLOTTE PERRIAND and Le CORBUSIER, as a sign of colorful and friendly tribute
The apartment will be open to the public from july15th till August 13th; from 14h to 18h, except Sundays & Mondays.
Alessandro Mendini said: "Finally I have the wonderful occasion to render homage to Le Corbusier with my delicate "performance" inside the famous Appartement 50 at the Unité d'Habitation in Marseille"."I selected eight colors similar to the ones he chose, - he continued - and I made eight ceramic totems, each one painted with one of the eight colors. I positioned them on the railing that looks out over the living room below, with the aim of creating a diaphragm that acts on the modulation of sunlight. Then, with diagonal ribbons, I intersected the rhythm of the double-height wall panels, thinking to add a Japanese touch to the modular boiserie, which is similar to vertical tatamis. A Nepalese rug brings figurative expression to the living area, and adds its tragic story linked to last year's earthquake in Katmandu".
