Vice President and Director of the Building Skin practice at Thornton Tomasetti. Sergio de Gaetano has more than 15 years of international experience in façade engineering and consultancy with an extensive working knowledge of complex, high-performance cladding and glass systems. His professional practice focuses on the integration of building skin, structure and sustainability using advanced generative and parametric modeling techniques. Current façade design credits at Thornton Tomasetti include Sky Soho in Shanghai, an iconic mixed-use development with Zaha Hadid, and Nova, a £760M transformative development of Victoria Circle in London with PLP Architecture. Project experience at previous firm Ramboll Whitbybird includes the new extension to the Tate Modern in London with Herzog & de Meuron; the new Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg with Grimshaw; the Pirelli Headquarters in Milan with Gregotti; and the Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi – the largest indoor theme park in the world. Sergio is director of Thornton Tomasetti’s Building Skin practice and an active member of ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers in the U.K.) and the Society of Façade Engineering. He has lectured widely in Europe and is a regular speaker at prestigious international conferences, including the GPD Finland and IABSE symposia. Sergio has been a visiting professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Brescia in Italy. He holds a five-year master’s degree in building engineering from Politecnico di Bari. Outside of work, Sergio’s interests include tennis and football. He also enjoys playing his favorite electric guitar – a Stratocaster – and writing songs. In fact, prior to becoming an engineer, he was the lead guitarist for an Italian rock band. More recently, Sergio spends most of his time with family, raising his two children.
