Hypothesis for an alternate city history Limassol / Cyprus / 2010
My hypothesis is a new reality. A new identity of the city that was lost with time, and reactivation of an Urban expansion by the key building in the heart of the city. In 1191, during the 4th Crusade, King Richard the Lion Heart, conquered the Limassol to free its people and the queen of Sicily from Emperor Isaac of Cyprus. The old town of Limassol was completely destroyed after the battle. The English built a castle / fort on the harbor side of Limassol, they chose this location for several strategic advantages. From that moment in the history of Limassol, the new city is born. Today is 2010, more than 800 years later. Slowly but surely the city of Limassol is losing its identity. The old town of Limassol with its cultural heritage is abandoned. I get to experiment with the city as part of my diploma project. I create a new key building for the city in the true historical and geographical center of Limassol. This building has the new scale and meets the needs of urban population today. The project brings back the qualities lost by the city, it gives it a significance. And most importantly it spawns a new urban expansion around itself.
