The theme of the competition is "Toward Urban Integration." This competition focuses on the eco-friendly regeneration of the expressway, Jemulpo-gil and the adjacent blocks in the west region of Seoul. DESCRIPTION After having thoroughly investigated the area and having identified the strengths and negative aspects, we have directed our thoughts in search of a theme. A theme that held together the whole project and would tie it to the city of Seoul. Seoul is one of the ‘Four Asian Tigers’ that depict the strong economic power and the exponential growth in the Far East in recent years. The Jemulpo-gil is a commercial area that needs a re-qualification, a 'conversion' to life. Hence the theme of the project, Slowing Rails. Our project recreates a kind of 'psychological instance' of what is the character of a city like Seoul, the speed, the frenzy. In Seoul you move, you live and work, quickly. Therefore the result of the burial of the large driveway, the overhanging park in a certain sense psychologically recalls what happens to the level below, which, thanks to a system of 'rails' re-creating the effect of light trails of car lights during night, but are no longer seen in terms of speed, but rather they are walking streets of 'slowing rails'. The course is divided along these three great 'slowing rails', slow walks that weave and chase each other creating a multiplicity of spaces and scenery. The common spaces enclosed by 'slowing rails' are resting places where you can stop, are the result of the balance between fast and slow, so they are real moments of life. Balance is another major theme of our project. Seoul is the capital of South Korea which has adopted the 'Ying Yang' as a national symbol, and we wanted to express this great national identity through the most important point, the culmination of our project, which is the new Mokdong Sports Center, the nerve center and of primary importance because it links the Jemulpo-gil and the park with the rest of the city. The project 'Slowing Rails' also pays attention to the re-qualification of adjacent blocks and therefore bother to bring back the previous trading blocks in attractive points and services such as restaurants, activities, shops, malls of considerable importance both aesthetic and economic because of the overlooking on the new park and new residential units. We firmly believe that our project is able to give new life to the area of Jemulpo-gil.
