Boston Medical (Shapiro Ambulatory Care)

The brand new state-of-the-art Shapiro Ambulatory Care Center at the Boston Medical Center is home to 67 of the best doctors Boston has to offer. Sitting in Boston’s historic South End, this nine-story outpatient center features environmentally sensitive materials and technology that set a new standard for sustainable design. The use of natural, sustainable materials in health care settings aids in creating an environment conducive to healing. That is why architects at Tsoi/Kobus & Associates chose to work with TERRART-Large architectural terracotta by NBK, a Hunter Douglas company. Terracotta facade panels are made from 100% raw materials yet are extremely durable, making them suitable for sustainable design. Furthermore, TERRART panels are customizable and come in a variety of colors, textures, and glazes. NBK created 62,000 square feet of custom color red with black iron spot panels and baguettes with a wire struck texture for the Shapiro Ambulatory Care Center. NBK worked with two separate contractors to panelize the tile and unitize the baguettes into a curtain wall prior to being transported on-site for installation. The Shapiro Ambulatory Care Center is registered as a pilot project with the Green Guide for Healthcare, which uses many of the same standards as the U.S. Green Building Council LEED-NC. The Shapiro Ambulatory Care Center at the Boston Medical Center is winner of the Hunter Douglas 2011 Project of the Year Award for North America.
