The project brings a new aura in a town developed in the seventies for mere lucrative purposes: a place that gives its best when snow covers the eyesores of architectural arrogance.
Just like a child, the building plays with snow, compacting and piling it in specific places, pre-defined by the shape of roof and facades, ice is part of the game and stalactites the ornament.
The size of the area is slightly bigger than the building footprint, which covers a surface of 1000 sm.
The partial demolition of the original building allowed to use the ground floor as entrance hall, and to host the technical functions connected with the hotel management. The total floor surface, distributed into four floors, is of 3200 sm .
The hotel is composed of 37 bedrooms with 99 beds, an entrance lobby and a cafeteria; a second lobby, more private and intimate, is located at the first floor, overlooking the landscape and the sport fields.
The new part of the building bridges the existing part; on top of a concrete platform, suspended from the old structure, it has been designed and built completely in wood for its lightness and to evoke the aura of old mountain structures.
The shape of the roof, its capability of keeping and releasing water, snow and ice, the orientation of the rooms according to the sun position and the views, are the driving elements that we used to organize the interior spaces in order to evoke and provoke unique sensations and views.
The building envelope is very well isolated, so that little energy is required for the hotel heating. The integration of a traditional system with one that allows to recuperate heat dissipated by the ice rink will help to keep the energy costs low.
